existential hold

So, maybe there are certain universes in which the hold exists and others where it does not? This is really complicated. Thanks Nuri.

  1. Maybe they are talking about the "Hold Alien" they will park on your windshield......

  2. But a stray apostrophe trumps nonsense quotation marks just about every time!

  4. Maybe it's not a stray apostrophe at all, but the sign is referring to payments made to the patron. In that case, it sounds like a great place to park.

  5. Why not, Bethany? Some people seem to think that quotes can be used for emphasis, even though they shouldn't be. But I understand that better than using an apostrophe for a plural. I'll never understand why someone things some plurals need more than just an s on them. Hence the trump.

  6. Jen, the reason I thought it was a stray aposrophe is that "MONTHLY PATRON'S" is so big that it just looks like the sign heading, as if to say "To monthly patrons:"

But maybe it is just saying "Monthly patron's... payment not received..." However, Jen, if that's the case, then it's STILL wrong. There would hopefully be more than ONE monthly patron. It would need to say "Monthly patrons' payments not received...."

Yeah, that must be a header: "(To) monthly patrons" with an errant apostrphe.

  7. sounds like we have different definitions of winning. I think the funniest thing is the winner...

  8. Hi again, Bethany. Well, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about "winning," because I don't see it written anywhere in here, besides right there. Perhaps you can explain a little more deeply (not only that in general, but also what you mean by what you think our "different definitions" might be)?

But on a whole separate note, have you run across my submission showing a sign by BYU and a Zions Bank branch with "'t-shirts'" written on it? If you have happened to run across it a little earlier than your month-or-two-behind "schedule" (and yes, I used quotes there, to suggest that it isn't really a concrete schedule), what do you think of it? :)

  9. Oh, okay, Bethany, I've reread your last posting in here to try to understand it better. So confirm for me, okay? You're saying that what I said about trumping is what the "winner" is, right?

And then you're saying that you think whichever error in a given situation is the funniest, is that winner (or Trump/trump card), right?

Okay, well what I meant as one trumping the other is which error is the most egregious. And I haven't yet either seen or remembered seeing any quotation-mark error that was as bad as or even worse than any error of putting an apostrophe in an attempted basic plural (one that's not possessive at the same time) or a first-person-POV verb.

But if I ever see a quotation-mark error that I somehow think has managed to stand out past an "apostrophes for plurals" or "apostrophes for 1-P-POV verbs" error, and if I remember to, then I'll certainly let you know. :-)

  10. Mike, I'm more than 2 months behind on sifting submissions. I could be posting more, but I just started a new job and simply don't have the energy. Your submission is probably somewhere in the queue.

  11. Oh yeah, I can understand sometimes not having the energy for something. Oh whow, about 2 months! Hmm... so I guess i'm looking at... about Halloween time or so for mine, huh?

Okay, well anyway, I did ask you some other questions in my previous response too. Will you look at and answer them as well, please?

Hey, congrats on your new job. What kind of work is it? What did you do before?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  12. Haha, this one is especially nonsensical!

  13. Yes, because it contains more than one kind of error!

  14. Mike, you understood my point, it really wasn't a big deal, I was just goofing around, you aren't in trouble or anything. I am a college professor, before I was a grad student and college instructor. If/when your picture gets posted, I always reply to the email, so you will know about it.

  15. Yeah, Bethany, I did understand *some* of what you were saying, true.

As for the other thing: you're saying that you think whichever error in a given situation is the funniest, is that winner (or Trump/trump card), right?

Where might you have gotten the idea that I could have been wondering if I was (yes, quotes:) "in trouble" with you?

Congrats on your new job. What is it? What were you doing before?

  16. Ohh, and what happened between what we were talking about that made you suddenly want to start putting my comments under moderation?
