The quotation marks are probably appropriate. While alcohol is officially prohibited in the rinks I play in,it's understood that having a beer in the dressing room after your game is ok. Just be discrete about it.
@Kurt (Krut?) I've been asked about that before and haven't found a consistent convention, so I use the comma because I think it indicates address. Like "what's up, Kurt?" I understand the potential confusion though. Would no comma be more clear?
@John: Surely you mean discreet, rather than discrete? Have a look at http://tinyurl.com/7xvvfdb @Bethany: I agree with the use of the comma in that context.
@bethany: I see the argument for using the comma there, as in, "Thank you, Kurt, for your post." However, it also sounds like the sign-off to a letter: "Sincerely, Kurt". So, while it may not be grammatically correct, I think that ommitting the comma would make it more clear who is thanking whom.
I just don't see the point in goung to a hockey game without having a beer, except at Joe Louis Arena in Detriot where a 12 ounce bottle of beer costs 8 bucks and you have to miss an entire period waiting in line to pee.

ReplyDelete@John Wise: Yeah, that's the joke.
ReplyDelete@bethany: Blog of unnecessary commas? In "Thanks, Kurt", are you saying thanks TO me or FOR me??

ReplyDeleteUnknown: Thanks for the "discreet" and "discrete" distinction. I'd never noticed that before.
