This reminds me so much of the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and her traveling companions ring the bell (which obviously works and summons the wizard).
But they are chastised by the wizard, who directs them to the sign, and will not acknowledge them until they comply with it: [Bell Out Of Order. Please Knock.]
Actually, it was the guardian of the gates of the Emerald City, not the Wizard himself. At the time the Wizard was far too closeted to perform such a function.
