Bella, first I wondered if they were nicknames to retain anonymity. But in that case, I'd expect something less specific than "Jack III" and more common than "Dayliha."
I now recall one of the "Curtis" comic strip's Kwanzaa stories, in which a boy with supernumerary fingers becomes a pianist. The narrator constantly put "Joe" in quotation marks, yet other characters in the story had none. Even as a kid, I found that stupid.
