Seems fitting to me, since nobody works on "Labor" Day.
I agree with Buffy - Labor Day is an excuse to NOT labor!
Perhaps they're Brits abroad, and while objecting to the local spelling "labor" are reluctantly going along with it.

I think the quotation marks are spot-on. Many people have to work on "national" holidays. ... At my local Peet's, I noticed the following sign:
In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, Peet's will be open this Thursday from 7a to 3p.
