JJ apparently really calls it by its full name, refrigerator, but you probably wouldn't understand that, hence the condescention to the colloquial "fridge." Thanks, Darin.

One might actually say this is a correct use of quotation marks, because "fridge" is, as you point, a colloquialism. Nonetheless, the quotes have that old-timey feel like when you see 'phone with an apostrophe in old books.
