"give me" the salt

Todd writes, "I saw this sign outside a great sushi place in Vancouver, Canada, where I live" but gives no indication why someone might want to be figuratively given five.

Well, you see it's a panhandler.....and they're not talking about a 'high-five' but a fiver, as in money. "Give me" is perhaps an attempt to be polite?

My first thought was panhandler, too. I would "give" him money, but not really.

lattegirl, perhaps it's a loan....or a bailout, maybe?

I'm not sure whether I'm reminded of high-fives or "Drop down give me five!" like with push-ups. Maybe it's the push-ups. After all, you're not really GIVING push-ups, you're just performing them.
