I've always thought the finger-quotes could make anything funny, when used more or less at random. Case in point . . .
I pledge "allegiance" to the flag of the "United" States of America. And to the "republic" for which it stands, one nation, under "God", with liberty and justice for "all".
Well, I for one don't know what half a mile is, and don't take anyone seriously who uses clumsy old imperial measurements. Take that America!
I love this! Does that means if walk around the 6th floor everyday for a while, I can claim I walk "5 miles" everyday?
Well, if you're really out of shape, it just feels like half a mile.
