  4. It's not necessary to put quotes around an asterisk. The asterisk would be enough.

  5. The quotes would be unnecessary if the format was simply

    *: required field

    , but since the usage is a linguistic symbol defined in a sentence, the quotation marks are proper.

    Punctuation Win.

  6. this series of symbols could just indicate any of the expletives that might have been used in the form. ("*" could then refer to any 4-letter expletive, like, this section is really required ("*" it!
