This one actually makes sense for NYC more than for most places. In our main street grid, what we think of as north and call north is actually northeast -- it's a problem for tourists, especially when the streets start angling more in the neighborhoods like the Village and around Wall St. You can be going logical-North and actually be going much more east.
Hey, I totally commiserate. That's about how good my sense of direction is. I feel an air quote opportunity coming on: next time my husband asks where we're headed.(He should know better by now.)

We have a freeway marked North that goes due west for a while. (And South goes due east). Maybe they should have "North" on the entrance ramp signs.
That sign would apply perfectly to Montreal.

And in New Mexico, there is the phenomena of parallel roads which merge. Signs of this nature would be appropriate there.
