Aren't they just quoting all the idiots who come in and try to get free stuff and therefore *shudder* using the quotation marks correctly? Or am I reading waaaaaaay too much into this?
congratulations on the new computer. what a great day for you. i agree with maughta. it sounds like they are quoting customers who frequently ask for ice water or a cup of ice. but it still is a great post.

this blog is so awesome. best idea for a blog ever.

yeah, maybe. Although I think the bigger issue here is: you don't serve WATER??
I think the quotation marks are more sarcastic than actually quotational. As in, "empty cup"? What kind of donut is an "empty cup"?
Did you not have a mac before? If so, congrats! You'll love it.
(sorry, I'm kind of obsessed)
Then where in the heck is an "ice cup" suppose to buy a donut???
I think they discriminate!
Of the lot, a cup of water would be all I'd want, and I would not mind paying for it.
But those signs say "you don't want any coffee or donuts either".
BUY6(SIX)DONUT
GET6(SIX)FREE
I wasn't quite sure. Could you repeat that using Roman numerals please?

Aren't those perfectly fine quotations marks to quote the words of the customers they so obviously despise?
Right, larry! How about saying we do not give away free cups?
If I am willing to pay full drink price, they ought to be willing to give me ice or water (rolling my eyes).
By the way, if you buy 6 (six) donut, you get 6 (six) free WHAT?
Where was the photo taken? Here in Chapel Hill we're coming out of a drought, so it was actually fairly common to see places not serving water.
That is crazy. Also? Congrats on the new Mac! If you haven't had a Mac before- John is right! You'll love it.
Actually, even if you have had one before, you'll still love it. :)
congrats on the mac! you'll love it! :-)
I agree with the suggestions that they are quoting the requests they hear. Probably the quote marks should be around "sorry".
Nope. Quoting customers.
I really like the other sign for all those people who do not know the number "6" but can read the word "(six)".
Next time I'm in there for my 6(six)donut, I'll ask for a "cup of iced water" because apparently that is allowed.
This one doesn't bother me so much because the sign writer could be quoting customers, as others have suggested.
