In this case, I think that "cream cheese" may be an appropriate use of quotation marks. It implies that the thing is incorrectly called cream cheese, and here they clearly intend to mean several cheeses, such as the mascarpone in the danish. It is clearly not the Philadelphia brand cream cheese, a processed cheese-like substance made by Kraft to which many refer by this term.
I know of something that smells like cheese, and in the right light could look like cheese...I'm pretty certain I'll stick to the real cheese as a topping on my pizza.
Awesome! I just bought a "cheese" sandwich from this "deli" today! I knew that sign looked familiar. This particular sign has a cornucopia of unnecessary quotation marks and misused apostrophes. For example, you can order your sandwiches "hot" or "cold." (I think that means they always arrive at room temperature.) And there's one sandwich that comes with "toasted wheat bread" (or something like that). It's the craziest little deli buried in the back of a parking garage, and it has the craziest signs. It keeps me entertained while I wait for my "lunch" to be prepared!
This also has an unnecessary apostrophe.
ReplyDeleteAdd on's?
Should be add-ons. No apostrophe. Nothing belongs to the add-ons.
Unless Add On is the nickname of the chef. You can have HIS avacado, or cream cheese or whatever.
ReplyDeleteYou can also have some unidentified "cheese." Or half of it.
ReplyDeleteOh there are many more levels of complication to this picture than I originally saw. Maybe I shouldn't admit to that...

ReplyDeleteMaybe they mean it's that fake, processed "cheese."
