Love your site, but I don't understand your issue with the backwards "r" in either case (Toys or Babes). The letter by itself would make no sense; it only becomes "are" when you speak it, hence the quotes.
Lucky for those of us with a pet peeve for unnecessary quote marks, we'll soon have fewer of them to contend with. Toys R Us has just revamped their signage. No more quote marks ! Now they've stuck a big star in the middle of the backwards R.
(Huh. I wonder if that means Sam Walton bought them out?) Anyway, about the signs: quotation marks, no quotation marks, frontwards, backwards- it doesn't matter. They still make no sense. The meaning is that they are babies. Who are? The employees? The owners of the corporation? Is it a plea for assistance? And what does it have to do with shopping there?

ReplyDeleteNot all quotes are unnecessary. :)
yeah, my issues is less with the quotes and more with the cutesy obnoxious spelling.
ReplyDeleteIf Toys R Us sells toys, what does Babies R Us sell?
ReplyDeleteClothes. Yeah, that makes sense.

ReplyDeleteThe letter by itself would make no sense, correct. The quotes make it no more grammatically correct. I don't get your point...
