sounds "tasty"

writes Matt, "My 10 year-old son and I found this in a Mexican food place in Austin, TX. I'm not sure what they were actually serving for dessert because I was too chicken to order the 'Flan'."

It's Mexican custard--at least without the quotation marks.

With quotation marks??

I dunno, the movie Soylent Green comes to mind, esp. with the first Baby Boomers getting Social Security.

Flan is a very sweet, caramelly delicious dessert. Try it next time, unless you are diabetic.

flan is just like a custard...but why the quotation marks??!! makes me think they're hiding something...

Oh my god, I just discovered your blog and it makes me so "happy!" Use of "unnecessary" quotation marks is my biggest pet peeve in life! I go on a rant everytime I see them - seriously, who are they quoting? Thank you for cataloging them all. I look forward to checking back in.

ok, people. Do you all think that I am stupid, or just not understand this blog? Or are you making fun of other "helpful" explainers and I don't get it?

Don't get me wrong--you should try flan, just not the flan in the picture.

The flan in the picture looks like puree'd freshwater salmon that wasn't been cooked yet.

very funny! I came across your page the other day. I was a little worried that if you were to find mine you would have a million screen shots of misplaced quotation marks. Though I have noticed you give a little more wiggle room to writing apposed to labeling and titles.
you could spend a lifetime on this I am sure of it.
Much respect~d

"Sounds like a sh*tty blog to me!"

Boy, I must say, this has to be one of the absolute worst blogs I've decided to waste my time on today. Has potential, but nope....not even slightly funny :-(

This post makes me wonder what exactly is in the "flan"... :-) Funny blog, people do use "unneccesary" quotation marks a lot.

"Hurray" on your blog!!!! I have always been a "huge" fan of unnecessary quotations - and so this is bookmarked! Keep up the "great" work!!!

This is definitely a blog I'm coming back to! Quotation marks used "incorrectly" are probably the funniest of all grammatical errors because it leads people to believe that the quoted word isn't objectively true, like your fake flan there.

I'm inspired to start a blog devoted to a different yet equally silly grammatical error. Suggestions, anyone?

I suggest misplaced modifiers. Those are funny.

Hahahah yeah the quotation marks does seem to make it seem questionable doesn't it? I like regular flan, not the "flan" in the picture though.

Hysterical. I love that a 10-year-old child picked up on it.

I don't know what's funnier - the ridiculously unenticing flan ad or all the people trying to explain to you what flan is...

And sadly, I think I know where this was taken and I think I used to work there.

I too have visited that particular Mexican food eatery and I worry about their "tres leches" as well as the "flan"
