or whatever deity

R. C. saw this one in Tulsa, OK. He points out that given the location, they probably aren't making a comment about the multiple potential conceptions of God.

  1. Maybe by "God" they mean that midget with a God complex that the supreme court put in charge?

  2. Nah, they mean "god" in a metaphorical way... like how you'd say "thank god" to express relief. So basically they're relieved that the troops exist (probably so the ad writers themselves don't have to get killed in dusty foreign countries).

  3. Is a "diety" a god of weight loss?

  4. how come snarky spelling correctors are ALWAYS anonymous? Let's see you write several posts a day without making any mistakes. I fixed it.

  5. Are they using god as a euphemism for sexual reproduction?

  6. Well, I wouldn't post anonymously to correct a spelling error, bethany, but if you're going to have a snarky blog you get to have snarky comments. (And doesn't your editing program have a spellchecker?)

The amazing thing is that the anonymous commenter managed to evade Coren's Law, which holds that any grammatical/spelling correction one posts will itself contain a grammatical/spelling error.

  7. I don't mind snark, I'm just saying that I use my real name when I snark, and anonymous cowards get on my nerves.
I compose in the blogger editor. I guess it does have a spell checker, but I'm usually posting in a rush between other things. Maybe I should post less often and spell check.

  8. I drive by the pictured billboard every day from work... Always found it rather striking...

  9. This is RC, source of "God" (giggle) billboard who wants to ask Anonymous who drives by the billboard and finds it "striking," striking dumb or striking brilliant?

  10. Bethany, post more often and forget the spell checking.
I think Anonymous posts are something less than couragous but that's the way some people are built. Also note the post was 3:24 PM and if they were at work . . .

  11. Anonymous's Law:

Every blog discussion sooner or later devolves into a debate on etiquette.

  12. You sure it wasn't a Unitarian Universalist orgainization that put this sign up?

  13. Thank "GOD" for bilboards like ths. Without them I would lose hope. *indian tear*

  14. Mikayla Starstuff:

No, the U.U.s' billboard would have read:

THANK GOD* FOR ALL THE TROOPS** FROM THE AMERICAN*** FAMILY****

    * The use of the word "God" here does not mean to imply that we are certain that a deity exists or to belittle those who believe in no deity or multiple deities.
** By "troops" we refer not only to American soldiers but to soldiers and civilians of all nations, and we wish to express our continued desire that none of them kill one another.
*** "American" here is not meant to signify that those from other countries do not believe in God* or are not thankful for troops**, nor to belittle them in any way, nor to imply that all people living within the U.S.A. borders are Americans, though we consider American all who consider themselves to be.
**** By "family" we mean any group of people, biologically-related or not, in an interdependent or interdependent-esque relationship, not limited by gender, sexual orientation, or any other factor.

  15. Whoa Jimmy, you nailed the Unitarian perspective . . . and illustrated why when I ask a Unitarian a question, I forget what I asked before they finsih the answer. Oxymoron: passionate Unitarian

  16. Can we go back to 10/14 and the anonymous post about "God" being a euphemism for sexual reporduction . . .Huh?! That went over my head at 5000 ft. Explain please.

I think what Anonymous(not me) meant was the billboard may as well have read: Thank 'sex' FROM THE AMERICAN FAMILY for all the troops.
Euphemisms being what they are... I think Anonymous meant 'dysphemism'. --Pat

  19. WHAT! #@&**!!!
"dysphemism" You people are on drugs. Google "American Family" and see what you get.
Now will the original Anonymous pleeeeeeeeeze tell me what he/she meant!
    Desperate in Tulsa

  20. Striking - like lightning I suppose.

    @rcmorrison - Um.
I think the poster is insinuating that the children borne as a result of sexual relations in American Families creates a new generation of cannon fodder to send to kill little brown people.

So the sign would be interpreted as
saying "Thanks to American Families having sex, we have all these troops."

    or something like that.

  21. perhaps it's an acknowledgement of the # of troops eing sent to the afterlife?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd have to say that Jeff, the first commenter, probably has it right. I mean, they didn't really mean that, but that's how I'd interpret it if the billboard was posted by an anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i think anonymous meant thank god sexual reproduction has allowed us to have troops, therefore us others, (although still created through sexual reproduction) don't have to do combat ourselves.

    but wow, really a stretch.

  24. I think it "refers" "to" this one guy in "California" who "legal"ly changed his name to God.

  25. A comment:
    >WHAT! #@&**!!!
    >"dysphemism" You people are on
    >drugs. Google "American Family"
    >and see what you get.
    >Now will the original Anonymous
    >pleeeeeeeeeze tell me what he/she
    >meant!
    >Desperate in Tulsa

I think that anonymous person was just referring to the fact that often when people use quotes or air quotes they are using a sexual innuendo. That's how I took it anyway.
But no matter how you take it, this sign is awesome! Not as awesome as the "no sex policy" van, but still cool. XD

  26. Similar example I caught in the North Dallas area:
    TELL THE KIDS
    I LOVE THEM
    "GOD"
