hi feminists

I'm pumped because Twisty at I Blame the Patriarchy linked here yesterday. As a result, I have several new examples in my inbox, and my hit-count increased by 2 powers of ten. I'm very pleased to have more visitors, and especially those of the smart feminist variety. I'm saving up your examples to spread them out over several days, because that's the kind of geek I am. The kind that likes things to post as close to daily as is reasonable. I feel popular. Thanks y'all.

Now I know I'm going to see these "great" signs everywhere.

Oh man, I just found this site today. I never knew there were others like me, who feel so strongly about people using quotation marks all willy nilly. I work at a restaurant, where the sign says "Welcome" to Boston Pizza... and our bills say "Have a great day". You're not welcome here, and we hope you have a shitty day, in other words...but my managers never listen.
Thank you for giving me a voice! Or, should I say "thank you".

I just had a furious argument with a British friend who said I was wrong to use a punctuation mark in a series on my blog, when, speaking of 4 Uppity Women named Julia, I entitled the series:

The 4 Julia's

He says 4 Julias, but that looks awful.

What do you think?

I came via Twisty and love your blog and the blog about the use of the word "literally" in non-literal ways.

Judith, I'm not a professional but I would have to side with your friend, since Julia's would suggest one Julia, possessive form. Maybe you could use Juliae?

The problem is that it looks ugly, just as I think The 4 Julias looks ugly. I know it's not possesive but I feel that one is allowed to trip the punctuation rules if you come up with an attractive result.

Now, I just feel defensive about my 4 Julia's :-)

Bethany--

Please justify your lack of comma in the title of this post. Also, I think the current top photo is the best one you've ever had.

Judith--

Lynne Truss says to go with the apostrophe. And she's British, so she should know.

Can we blame quotation mark abuse on the patriarchy, too?

(Yes, it's *that* Kathryn)

Kathryn, thanks for referencing everyone's favorite punctuation celebrity. I'm going with that.

As to the lack of comma, I generally only punctuate headlines when it changes meaning. I'm willing to accept criticism if someone has a compelling reason why I should.

Thanks, Kathryn, for that supporting Truss.

(sorry, but I couldn't help it)

And I agree, Bethany, that we can be freer in a headline than in the text itself. Now, should I have put a . after my interjection in ( )...?

No, I don't really want to know. Thanks both.

Some of us are merely "feminists," to my unceasing dismay.
